I knew I had to make something with the ham in our fridge. It was boneless and pre-cooked, so the recipe was really more about the flavour. We also have about 15 lbs of potatoes in our pantry at the moment (oops), so I needed to use some of those.
After searching through several recipes online, I couldn’t find anything that a) looked good and b) didn’t require a trip to the grocery store. So I just made it up, based on what many of the recipes contained.
Sweet Slow Cooker Ham
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 T mustard (any kind)
- 2 T maple syrup
- 4 cups coke
- 4 potatoes
- 1 carrot
- 1 onion
I cut diagonal lines into the ham to form a diamond pattern. The idea was to combine the brown sugar and mustard and rub the ham with it, keeping the rub on the ham in the score lines. This did not work. I rubbed the ham but I’m sure most of it fell off as it heated. Whatever.
Put coated ham in slow cooker. Pour in syrup, coke, potatoes, carrot, onion, and add salt and pepper to taste. Cook on low for 6 hours.
This was pretty good, but I didn’t love it. I generally don’t like sweet meat (maple bacon, etc), so I’m not 100% surprised. Will try something savoury next time! The important thing is, the ham wasn’t wasted and I tried something new. Still a win.
