Lightening review: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

I just finished reading Phillip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and it was quite different from everything I’ve read in recent years.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where many people have left earth to live on colonies, animals have great value, and androids are worth a high bounty, Dick sets his reader up with two main protagonists. One is a bounty hunter with the police department and the other is a less-than member of society, deemed to have lower intelligence and a lower-class citizen.

The story is interesting and eerie, and the story goes from a slow start to unexpected action in a hurry. It’s also a quick read, just under a hundred pages. Not something you’ll spend many hours on.

One thing I really liked is that the story doesn’t wrap up all the loose ends. I mean, I didn’t like it because I prefer to have an answer for everything, but I feel that in this case the story is strengthened because of it. The characters wrestle with issues and don’t always find the answer, which creates credibility. At the same time, the character development is strange and slow, and a lot of the dialogue between characters seems expository.

So I would say, it’s an interesting read. Check it out. It might make you think.
